Gramazio Kohler Research, the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at the Institute of Technology in Architecture, operates at the forefront of architectural design and production enabled through digital manufacturing techniques. To our infrastructure belongs the Robotic Fabrication Laboratory (RFL), a unique digital construction environment, which allows for world-class research in the field of robotic fabrication in architecture and construction. Furthermore, the Immersive Design Lab (IDL) is an interdisciplinary laboratory for collaborative research and teaching in the field of interactive extended reality and machine learning in design, architecture, and engineering.
We are looking for a highly skilled software engineer to work on the development of the open-source python framework for research in architecture and robotic fabrication (COMPAS framework and the COMPAS FAB package). You will focus on the development and integration of software and hardware systems and work in a multi-disciplinary team of software engineers, architects, computer scientists and roboticists. Your projects will include multi-disciplinary collaborations with the Swiss Data Science Center and with Intrinsic.ai -an Alphabet company in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence- and will span a broad spectrum of exciting tasks, from bridging cutting-edge automation technology and industrial robots with computational design in architecture, to exploring design methodologies connecting extended reality and machine learning.
You have a degree in Computer Science or a related field and several years of experience as a software engineer. You have solid experience in multiple programming languages, in particular Python. Experience working with distributed systems, robotics middleware (e.g. ROS) and path planning are a big plus. Familiarity with containerization and continuous integration pipelines is an asset. You are fluent in English and enjoy working in an international, diverse and interdisciplinary team.
