Software Engineer, 80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are looking for a highly skilled software engineer to work on the development of python libraries for research in architecture and timber construction, based on the open source COMPAS framework developed by ETH Zurich.

- You will focus on the software development and integration across different CAD packages (Autodesk Revit, Archicad and cadwork3d) and work in a multi-disciplinary team of software engineers, architects, computer scientists

- Your projects will include multi-disciplinary collaborations with the timber construction companies and will span a broad spectrum of exciting tasks


You have a degree in Computer Science or a related field and several years of experience as a software engineer. You have solid experience in multiple programming languages, in particular Python. Experience working with plugin systems is a big plus. Familiarity with continuous integration pipelines is an asset. You are fluent in English and enjoy working in an international, diverse, and interdisciplinary team.

PhD Position: Computational Design and Digital Fabrication of high-performance timber plate structures, 100%, Zurich, fixed-term
Project background

This PhD position is part of the interdisciplinary based at the Chair Gramazio Kohler Research research project “Connecting physical engineering and digital design: Enabling high-performance timber plate structures through simplified connections and planning processes”. The project is a collaboration between Gramazio Kohler Research (Chair for Architecture and Digital Fabrication) at ETH Zurich and the Chair for Timber Structures (Prof. Dr. Andrea Frangi).

Job description

-The objective of this PhD position is to investigate methods and techniques for the planning, fabrication and construction of timber plate structures, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary collaboration.

- The project will involve team-based, open-source software development to build planning automation tools and digital information exchange between AEC disciplines.

- Specific topics of investigation may include computational design, timber construction, CNC fabrication, robotic assembly, plate structures, semantic data models, finite element analysis, and plugin development.

- The PhD position (full-time) will span 4 years of research and is funded according to standard SNSF regulations.

Profile

- You have a very good architectural or advanced technical degree, corresponding to the FHEQ-Level 7

- We expect strong programming skills (preferably Python), multiple years of programming experience as well as profound knowledge of professional computer-aided design and 3D modelling

- In addition, you have experience in CAD/CAM (preferably McNeel Rhinoceros) and/or robotic fabrication, as well as strong analytical and mathematical skills

- Previous experience in timber construction or structural engineering will be beneficial

- Fluent English language skills are required for this position, German fluency is not required but will be beneficial

- You should be reliable, motivated and be able to work independently while also having excellent teamwork and communication skills

Architecture & Technology (A&T) Doctoral Programme, ETH Zurich, 100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Architecture & Technology (A&T) Doctoral Programme seeks to attract exceptional candidates to join our group of 50+ international doctoral students. We offer two paid, full-time (100%), 3.5-year doctoral fellowships to start in October of each year.

About the Programme

The A&T Doctoral Programme is ETH Zurich’s interdisciplinary educational platform committed to training scholars in research and teaching of technology in architecture. The programme is offered and managed collaboratively by the professorships of the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA). The work of the ITA professorships assimilates many diverse aspects of employing science, technology and engineering in architecture, including computational design of buildings and structures, building processes and systems, digital and robotic construction and fabrication, and many others. The following professorships are currently involved in the A&T doctoral programme:

Successful applicants will join one of the above professorships under the mentorship of the respective professor. Hence, we expect the candidates to define which professorship would be most suitable for the realisation of their research proposal and indicate this explicitly in their application packages. Although the selected applicant will be primarily associated with the selected professorship, the interdisciplinary character of the programme ensures the involvement of other parties during the studies. For example, one of the milestones of this doctoral programme is the Aptitude Colloquium, in which doctoral students defend their research plan before all ITA professors and researchers. Our work takes place in the Arch_Tec_Lab, a high-tech zero-emissions building designed and developed by ITA.


Timeline (2026 intake)

The submission deadline for both application package and recommendation letters is January 31, 2026. Incomplete submissions will not be considered. The timeline is as follows:

-1 February to 15 March 2026: applications screening / eligible application packages are forwarded to the corresponding professorships who may conduct initial candidate interviews.

-late March 2026: shortlisted applicants (maximum 6) are invited for an online interview with all participating professors.

-Latest by April 1, 2026: successful applicants are notified.
