Dr. Aleksandra Anna (Ania) Apolinarska is a computational designer, architect and software developer.
As a senior postdoctoral researcher at Gramazio Kohler Research (GKR), she is currently exploring the applications of machine learning to enhance the design process, with a particular focus on generative AI for both forward and inverse design tasks.
Ania's interests and expertise extend to computational methods for design exploration and optimization, and applications of robotics and augmented reality for fabrication and assembly. She feels particularly fond of complex problems that involve geometry, structural design and fabrication. Ania is also a keen designer, coder and speaker.
Having joined GKR in 2013 as a computational specialist and later as a doctoral student, and has since played a pivotal role in launching and leading various research and industry collaboration projects, including the Digital Timber research agenda within NCCR Digital Fabrication programme. In recognition of her contributions, Ania was appointed to GKR's Executive Board in 2019.
Ania is also a registered architect with an extensive experience in computational design of geometrically complex buildings from her earlier professional career in offices across Europe, incl. Foster+Partners, designtoproduction, LAVA and UNStudio.
