Cadwork Connect, 2025

In this project, we are developing “Cadwork Connect”, the first software plugin capable of transferring native data models between the architectural CAD platforms Revit and Archicad and the timber-engineering software cadwork 3D – in both directions. This eliminates the need for complex exchange workflows based on 2D paper drawings or Imports and Exports.
Using a semantic description of the geometries, no conversion into intermediary exchange formats is required. You simply select the geometry elements in your CAD environment and push the data directly to cadwork 3D. The timber engineer receives the native data elements ('Hüllkörper') in their cadwork 3D environment.
The plugin integrates seamlessly into both the Revit and Archicad environments. Any changes to wall, floor, window, and roof elements can be pushed from the architectural model and pulled by the timber engineers. Building element types are transferred together with their layer build-ups, which can be edited and synchronized from either side.
To ensure maximum usability and applicability, our team conducted a thorough examination of current workflows used by timber planners at multiple timber companies (e.g., ERNE AG Holzbau, S. Müller Holzbau AG, Abt Holzbau AG) and architecture offices (Penzel Valier AG, konzeptS AG and EM2N AG), as well as leading BIM planning companies (B3 AG, LTplus AG, Speckle AEC Systems Ltd.).
The software architecture consists of several independent packages: COMPAS cadwork, the cadwork 3D API (cwapi3d), and COMPAS_PB.
