Remote Material Deposition (RMD) takes a first step in opening a novel approach to digital fabrication, within which material-driven robotic fabrication is not only used for construction, but as a guiding principle in the design and fabrication process: Through the digitally controlled throwing of material, a small-sized robotic system is enabled to deposit material at a remote location and therefore erect complex large-scale building structures over distance, exceeding the robot’s constrained workspace. Thus, RMD offers a radically new approach of thinking about and materializing architecture. Initiated by the research group of Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler at ETH Zurich, the building structures produced within this scope are less constrained by conventional parameters of robotic fabrication set-ups (such as, for example, workspace limitations, or the use of discrete and standardized building elements) and result in unique material morphologies that are a direct expression of a dynamic and adaptive fabrication process, mapping out a new architectural landscape of ‘Digital Materiality’.
